Photo by Coleman Glover on Unsplash I always enjoy reviewing the top genealogy sites that FamilyTree Magazine publishes each year. One of the sites that they highlighted was Waymarking. While technically not a genealogy site, it is interesting. Let’s look. According to their website, Waymarking has “the tools to share and discover unique and interesting locations on the planet.” You can search for a particular location or do a general search like I did. I put in the name of a local town, Fairmount, and a number of pictures or tagged spots popped up including a picture of the North Dakota/South Dakota border sign as well as the historic border marker that denotes where North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota meet. Here you can look for yourself: https://www.waymarking.com/wm/search.aspx?f=1&lat=46.0547&lon=-96.60291&t=3&id=Fairmount+ND&st=2 Interestingly, it also included quite a few pictures of places within a thirty-mile radius.
I thought it would be fun to try a historical area like Fredericksburg, Virginia. In addition to more historical places that you would expect, there were some “interesting” ones like the local McDonalds. You never know what people might pin. https://www.waymarking.com/wm/search.aspx?f=1&lat=38.2968&lon=-77.48286&t=3&id=Fredericksburg+virginia&st=2 Try searching for one of your ancestor’s places of settlement or an area where they traveled. And try other countries as I’ve noticed tags for them as well. Who knows, maybe you will find some interesting markers or information about places related to your family. Happy “traveling”!
