While not a genealogy site, ThoughtCo has a plethora of great information for the family historian and genealogists. ThoughtCo considers itself to be a premier reference site and a wealth of information is available on many topics. Let’s look at a few that are relevant to family historians. You can search by general topics such as American History, European History or Military History. It is a one stop shop for understanding the history of a particular region of the world, all provided for free by expert contributors. I have found this site to be extremely useful when deep diving into genealogy for a particular country. Here is an example what I found when trying to better understand what genealogy resources were available when researching in France. I found that I garnered better results if I search for “French Genealogy” rather than just French or France. Genealogy in France: How to Research Your French Ancestry (thoughtco.com) What I especially like is that the information is straightforward and really clear about what you can and cannot find for an area. Besides the online databases available, there are practical suggestions if you are planning to visit a local office and what you can and cannot expect to find. I thought I would try looking for North Dakota genealogy. The results were not specific to North Dakota but there were helpful articles related to the United States. For example, there is a state by state listing of where to find vital records online. Sadly, North Dakota was not listed but the Minnesota and South Dakota were included in the list. It is good to look beyond the large genealogy sites and see what else is available. Just for fun, I found a listing of top 10 educational opportunities for genealogists.
